markdown custom ankor does not work

I can not get the markdown custom anchors working in my documents. If I try the example from documentation:

# Section Heading

Some body text of this section.

<a name="my-custom-anchor-point"></a>
Some text I want to provide a direct link to, but which doesn't have its own heading.

(… more content…)

[A link to that custom anchor](#my-custom-anchor-point)

I get a proper cross-reference to the anchor but the link does not follow to the anchor pont.
All help appriciated.
